In Medicine River (1992)

Coyote Oldman   In Medicine River  (also on iTunes)

I am pleased to release this, the fifth  Coyote Oldman recording, "In Medicine River". This
work is offered as a sincere and simple expression of joy and gratitude for this beautiful
world and for the deep roots which connect us to the great source, flowing like a river
through all people and all of creation.

"In Medicine River" overflows with unusual musical instruments:
Traditional Native American flutes of this continent (North America)
Incan panpipes of South America
New experimental wooden flutes
Thousand year old clay flutes of Central America
Drums, bells and rattles from the world over.

The Native American flutes are of my own construction and are based on 150 year old
Lakota Artifacts.  I owe many thanks to the ancient Native American people who developed
these powerfully expressive flutes.

As flute maker and musician, I have the advantage of being able to build the flutes of my
imagination.  These experimental flutes are big and speak with an awesome bass voice.  My
large instruments retain the basic technology of the Plains Indian flutes with some
accommodations for size.  As far as I know, these experimental flutes are the only ones
of their kind.

The panpipes are Incan in basic design and are based on clay artifacts I have encountered
in the past 20 years of research.  I build them of bamboo and wood, in scales and keys compatible with my Plains Indian flutes. Note: all of my Native American type flutes are retuned to melodic pentatonic
scales in standard pitch.

Ah yes,  the artifacts.  The ancient flutes are 700-2,000 year old pre-Columbian ocarinas and
panpipes.  Their high-pitched earthy tones are heard throughout "In Medicine River".  These
artifacts had a wonderful presence in the technological setting of the modern recording
studio.  A special thanks to Dr. Richard Payne for the loan of these fine little treasures.

Michael Fitzsimmons' immersion in prayerful drumming began many years ago and draws
upon a fine collection of ethnic percussion instruments.  On "In Medicine River" Michael
Fitzsimmons plays log drum, congas, bass drum, bells and rattles.
