updated: February 18 , 2012- Pictured are the new Desert Flutes, I have 4 key of B available (colorful flutes) and I have 1 A flute and 3 of the large G flutes (honey colored basswood with triangle designs.
This is the ancient South Western Desert flute, based on artifacts attributed to the Mojave (mo-HA-vee) and other people of the area: rim-blown, 4 finger holes. The basic design and scale are from an 1800s artifact, very cool flute, simple and haunting. This ancient flute was introduced to the World from Coyote Oldman Flutes in 2007.
Smaller painted flute- Length = 24.7 inches, the low note is B
Larger Triangle pattern flute- Length= 28 inches, the low note is A
Largest Triangle pattern flute- Length= 30.5 inches, the low note is G
The 4 hole flute is an easier reach even in the large keys.
Tuning and basic design are based on mid 1800s artifacts, based on research done by Dr. Richard Payne and myself. the B is made from Eastern Aromatic Cedar with very durable Earth pigment enamel paint, deer skin. The larger A and G are basswood with burned designs. This is a rim-blown flute, a little easier to learn than most rim-blown flutes. The 4 hole flute is challenging to learn but offers a doorway to all rim-flutes. This simple flute has a strange and ancient quality to the scale and tone. When I play this flute for other people, their eyes get big.
